Complete makeover for Hostel “De Draecke” in Ghent

After 21 years of intensive use, the hostel of Ghent needed some drastic renovations. At the end of 2014 the hostel was temporarily closed and the building was stripped back to its original structure. Today, the 28th of August, the Flemish Youth Hostel Association (VJH) is proud to present the completely renewed hostel.

More than a bed
Hostelling is all about the discovering the real hostel experience; meeting new friends and new places. “It’s  not about staying in your room all day, but hitting the city and discovering new things. In the common areas you can get to know other travellers and exchange tips”, tells Tom De Bruyckere, president of VJH. “With this in mind, the whole ground floor got a total restyling.

When you enter the hostel, you are being welcomed by some happy figures, including a green dragon, referring to the name of the hostel. De graffiti painting is made by Bué The Warrior, a famous street artist from Ghent. The reception is integrated in the bar and also connected with the dining room and lounge. There’s a computer corner and free wifi. Next to this there is a large meeting room which can also be used as a dining room for big groups.

No nonsense but comfortable
The bedrooms are situated on the three floors. All rooms are completely renovated and redecorated. The bathrooms are new and each room is fitted with its own shower, sink and toilet. For every bed there is a nightlight, power point and locker. Two bedrooms have been built on so the total capacity has increased to 119 beds.

For the Flemish Youth Hostel Association, this is the final step in a larger process of modernization. “Except for hostel “Bruegel” in Brussels, where the renovations will be completed in 2017, we can now welcome our guests in nice and contemporary city hostels,” says Tom De Bruyckere. “Earlier this year we opened three brand new hostels in Kortrijk, Hasselt and Lier. Before that, the hostels of Oostende, Antwerpen, Mechelen and Leuven completed the list. Each of them modern hostels; no nonsense but with all necessary comfort. Ideal for a backpacker who wants to share a room; for families who prefer the privacy of a private room; and also for groups who are looking for extra services such as meals and conference rooms.”

Top location in the heart of Ghent
Located in the medieval heart of funky Ghent, you are really in one of the best spots for exploring Belgium’s best kept secret. The castle of the counts is just around the corner and also other hotspots are within walking distance. Central but still in a really quiet area of Ghent, close to the canal.
